MS Case Study - the case for change

When we developed inVerse, we knew that it could make a big difference in the right context. However, when we started to look at chronic conditions like Multiple Sclerosis the amount of impact on healthcare costs are positively staggering in two dimensions:

1. leverage the sunk costs in clinical trials that have both been successful and importantly, as well as some of those that failed

2. model the savings that could be made through new interventions using the insights gained

Importantly, given the scale of chronic conditions, and with our capability to uncover important findings from electronic health records (EHRs) using the methods from inTrigue, we can then also validate results both trough observational studies as well as through historical analysis of the EHRs.

Cost advantages of the approach

The work carried out on the Multiple Sclerosis clinical trials in this case study was based on leveraging 45 trials. We can see that taking the average cost cited previously, this was involving other people's investment estimated at $833 million dollars in order to derive some clear opportunities and outcomes:

  • Insights that would lead to designing future trials better
  • Begin to think about what this could mean for avoided cost on inappropriate treatments
  • Actually constructed algorithms that would define better clinical choices and prescribing to prevent disease progression, for example.

This approach can be used to do the same analysis on any chronic conditions which carry a great cost burden on the healthcare systems.

Financial impact of success

Calculating the cost impact is always difficult, so here we have taken a very low success potential to show that the impact is still very significant if some improvement through personalization of treatments can be achieved for patients:

MS patient numbers, which we believe is under estimated, are at about 1,000,000 patients in the USA.

If we could intervene in the treatment regime of only 3% of these patients who have not progressed from mild symptoms that would impact 20,000 lives. We know that the cost impact of moving from mild to moderate is an uplift of around $20,000 USD per annum. Therefore we can see that the potential cost saving would be in the order of $600 million - per annum.

If we could intervene in the treatment regime of only another 3% of these patients who have not from moderate symptoms that would impact another 20,000 lives. We know that the cost impact of moving from mild to moderate is an uplift of around $50,000 USD per annum. Therefore we can see that the potential cost saving would be in the order of $1.5 billion - per annum.
